The West End Fire & Rescue station donated the 1935 International fire engine, a historic apparatus apart of the Shippensburg community, to Shively Motors to showcase in their museum. The station needed to use the space for new equipment and had to find a new home for the 1935 International.

Rather than being sold out of the community, the apparatus gets to stay in Shippensburg, alongside a collection of over 35 antique and classic automobiles. “It has been the mission of the Shively Motors Mopar Museum to preserve local automotive history. We have several vehicles that were sold new by our dealership or have other local history,” said Vice President and General Manager of Shively Motors Bryan Burkholder, “We appreciate the opportunity to display this important piece of local firefighting history and honored to have it in our museum.”

The apparatus has been in possession of West End Fire & Rescue since November of 1957. They purchased it from Upland County Fire Department in Chester County, Pennsylvania for around $300. The precise timeline that the fire engine was in active service remains unclear, but it serves as an important piece to the company’s history and a recognition of volunteer firefighters then and now. “We hope that future generations of firefighters, as well as the public, can learn and enjoy seeing this vintage truck and understand the challenges they faced in their era,” said Burkholder.

He went on to express that Shively Motors takes value in supporting their first responders, as West End Fire & Resue is the closest fire station to their business.

In 2019, the apparatus received a national award from the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America. This award highlighted not only the preservation of this historic fire engine, but also local volunteer firefighter history for generations to come.
