Some athletes leave their mark on one sport. Carla Shearer Christian left hers across three, and the impact of that competitive spirit has carried well beyond the playing field.

Christian will be inducted into the Chambersburg Athletic Hall of Fame on September 18 and 19, recognizing a high school career that was anything but ordinary. At Chambersburg Area Senior High School, she suited up for 10 varsity teams in field hockey, basketball and softball, bringing the same intensity and pride to everyone.

Her teams consistently competed at the highest levels, earning league and division championships, District III appearances and state tournament success. Christian was also recognized individually as a Mid Penn Division I All Star.

But statistics and titles only tell part of her story.

For Christian, being a Trojan meant more than competing. It meant being part of a team, supporting the people around her and representing her school with pride.

That mindset followed her to Bloomsburg University, where she continued competing in both field hockey and basketball. Her college career brought even more success, including two NCAA Division III field hockey championships and All-American honors. In 1987, she received the Eleanor Rae Award as Bloomsburg’s Outstanding Senior Female Athlete and in 2003, she was inducted into the Huskies’ Hall of Fame.

Today, Christian’s connection to the community continues. She has spent 24 years working at the Chambersburg YMCA, including 11 years as Executive Director.

From a three-sport athlete at Chambersburg to a collegiate champion and now a community leader, Christian’s story is about more than what she accomplished. It is about the way she continues to show up, lead, and give back.

Her induction into the Chambersburg Athletic Hall of Fame celebrates not only the athlete she was, but the lasting impact she continues to make.
