Generative engines are the AI-driven chatbots you know and love, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot. Instead of returning a list of links, these tools generate answers in a conversational, human-like format.
For example, if you ask ChatGPT for a recipe, it doesn’t send you off to five different cooking blogs. It gives you the ingredients, step-by-step instructions, bonus tips or substitutions, and may even ask follow-up questions to help you refine what you’re looking for.
Now compare that to a traditional Google search. If you searched for “easy dinner recipe,” you’d see a list of links to cooking blogs, YouTube videos, and recipe sites. Google is primarily surfacing content that already exists across the web, rather than generating something new from scratch.
That difference is what makes GEO important.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing your website so it ranks highly in Google search results. This usually involves targeting popular keywords, earning backlinks, optimizing pages, and improving overall site performance.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) builds on that foundation by adding another layer. Instead of optimizing only for Google’s search results, you’re also optimizing for AI tools that generate answers directly. The goal of GEO is to make sure generative AI engines look to your website when they’re pulling information to answer user questions.
Generative engines gather and synthesize information from multiple sources across the internet. GEO focuses on formatting and writing content in a way that makes it easier—and more likely—for AI to select your website as a trusted source.
Important note: SEO is not going away. We still want our websites to appear on the first page of Google search results. But now, we also want Google’s AI Overview and other generative tools to cite our website as part of their answers.
Practical GEO Strategies for Businesses
- Keep your content clear, direct, and structured
Generative engines rely on content that is easy to understand and easy to extract. That means the visible content on the front end of your website matters just as much as the technical elements on the back end.
Headings, definitions, short explanations, and summaries help make it crystal clear what a page is about. When your content is structured well, AI can more easily identify key takeaways and use them in its responses.
- Be conversational and give examples
Because generative engines are designed to communicate using natural language, your content should do the same. Writing in a conversational tone makes it easier for AI to match your content to how real people are asking questions.
Examples help even more. They make your information concrete, relatable, and easier for AI to apply to specific search queries. If AI can clearly see how your information answers a real-world question, it’s more likely to use it.
- Prioritize quality over quantity
You don’t need to cram as many keywords as possible into a blog post, and you don’t need to write 1,500 words if you can clearly make your point in 500.
Clear, helpful, well-written content beats long, bloated content every time—especially when generative engines are deciding what to trust and reference.
In other words, focus on answering real questions well, rather than writing content just to hit a word count or keyword target.

For local businesses, GEO isn’t about chasing the latest marketing buzzword. It’s about staying visible as the way people search continues to change. When someone asks an AI tool, “Who’s the best plumber near me?” or “What HVAC company should I call in Chambersburg?”, generative engines need clear, trustworthy local sources to pull from.
Businesses that publish helpful, well-structured content—like service explanations, FAQs, and real-world examples—are more likely to be included in those AI-generated answers.
